In The Magical Forest, 2022

While in his teens, Jean Pigozzi began photographing in a diaristic style that evolved around his upper-class lifestyle. Using a Leica camera, he took photographs while mingling with artists and tastemakers. His compositions—candid and intimate—are significantly influenced by Robert Frank and Helmut Newton. They include friends such as Andy Warhol, Anjelica Huston, and Diane von Furstenberg, among others, and capture scenes of social revelry or voluptuous leisure. Pigozzi often appears in his own photographs, affirming the camera’s role as a tool for his keen engagement with the world.

In the Magical Forest explores the ecosystem of Panama trees on the island of Simca, off the Pacific coast of Panama, where Pigozzi has a home. For the artist, photographing trees in the jungle captures the beauty of nature while showcasing the earth’s fragility.

Pigozzi graduated from Harvard University. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions including Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris; Les Rencontres D’Arles Photographie, France; the Moscow House of Photography, Moscow; and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin; and the Baker Museum, Florida.

Pigozzi currently lives and works between New York, London, Paris, and Antibes, France.
