Thea Traff’s emotionally driven photographs relay psychological complexity with dramatic contrast and precise framing. For "The Elevator Series" the artist surreptitiously photographed a diverse set of well- dressed individuals in the Condé Nast building elevators where she worked. The dark, enigmatic interiors are offset by colorful clothing and hair, as her subjects are preoccupied with their daily commute.
Traff emphasizes that people connect with each other by showing vulnerability, and her images capture gestures and expressions that relay this sensitivity, bringing the viewer closer to the subject. Here, in "The Elevator Series" this understanding is further pursued, as her subjects remain unaware that they are being photographed, providing an additional layer of vulnerability.
Traff graduated from Colgate University and is a freelance photo editor for editorial publications including Time magazine, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker.
